General things

Carpe diem...carpe noctem

A huge difference and a very hard thing for adapt for me is the time schedule the university has. That means that there are classes which start at 7:30pm and go until 9:30pm.

But I think this is a cultural difference, because also the stores and shops are open until 10pm. Most bars and restaurants until 2am. Spanish people don't eat lunch before  2pm and don't eat dinner before 9pm. I have to get used to those times ...

The character of catalan people

Generally speaking, in my opinion most catalan students are hard to talk to, because they always stick to their group (clique), which they've known since they were little children. Fortunetaly not all of them are like this so I've already found very open-minded and helpful people. Also people who want to improve their language skills so we have the possibility to have a language tandem (english- spanish, english- catalan, german- spanish,...), where both benefit from.

Finances

The living costs of Spain are quiet comparable to the ones in Austria. The supermarket prices do not vary that much. While I lived in Barcelona, I spend as much money as I would have spend living in Graz. Maybe a little bit more, because I went out more and bought things for my friends and family. Also the restaurants have the same price range. Acommodation is quiet expensive in Barcelona but I was lucky that I found a very big and furnitured room with a window (!) for less than 400€. In my opinion the location of the apartment is more important than the room itself, because I did not spend much time in my room.
